Between
Old School Studios, Artcore Brighton
This October, Old School Studios presents BETWEEN, an exhibition of photography and lens-based work as part of Photo Fringe and October Unpacked.
Between is an invitation to pause in the spaces and moments we often pass through without noticing. To explore thresholds, liminal spaces and the relationships that shape our experience of the world; to consider the tensions, transitions and possibilities that exist between them.
Between seasons. Between certainty and ambiguity. Between arrival and departure. Between self and other. Between memory and possibility.
Bringing together work by Old School Studios resident artists and artists selected through our first open call, the photography and lens-based work will sit alongside a wider exhibition of painting, ceramics, sculpture and other creative practices from across the studio community.
This show reflects on our experience of inhabiting this space and time, and the continuous movement between places, moments and states of being - reimagined through creativity and community.
Come and explore the work, meet the artists and spend an afternoon or evening at the studios, with live DJs, food and cocktails from La Cantina.

Jayne Wilson
The Equilibrists
Jayne Wilson produces poetic documentary portraits of place and filmic montages that are preoccupied with social narratives, scientific legacies and memories. Teetering on the edge of the explanatory, fact and fiction collide in filmed sequences and reappropriated images that, through deliberately ambiguous and unconventional means, foster a curiosity for the truth whilst subverting it.
Jayne has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally in festivals and galleries. She is a lecturer in collaborative film practice, and lead programmer of Short Circuit experimental documentary screenings.

Uli Stein

Today, Stein translates this cinematic eye into fine art photography, exploring material culture and physical memory through archival giclée printmaking. Based in England, his recent exhibitions include Worthing Museum’s Open26 and 'Correspondens' in Paris.
Sabrina D.
Abel & Intimity
My name is Sabrina, I work under the artist name Sabrina D. I have been making photographs since I was 15. Photography became deeply meaningful to me after losing someone very close to me. That day, I understood that a photograph can become a trace of a person’s presence, something that remains when someone is gone.
My work, Empreinte (Imprint), explores memory, presence and traces of existence through self-portraits, still life, black and white photography, and soft, muted colour. Originally from Belgium, I studied art throughout my life and have also taught art, especially to children.
Devon McCulloch
Absented (Positive) & Absented (Negative)
I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores unconventional uses of modern technologies and materials, including X-rays, medical paraphernalia, passports, identity cards and historical documents. Working within anti-portraiture, I question conventions of identity, representation and subjectivity. Through experimental processes, I reconfigure personal and bureaucratic documents into ambiguous material forms, exploring how systems of identification shape our understanding of identity, belonging, mortality and memory.
