SA TA NA MA

Eva Kalpadaki

SA TA NA MA is a series of images captured at different times of the day and on different days. Each image consists of 11 photographs of the Brighton sea, taken with a camera programmed to automatically shoot one frame per minute over an 11-minute period. During this time, I sit in front of the camera with my eyes at the same level as the viewfinder, meditating with closed eyes. I practise the Kundalini Yoga meditation SA TA NA MA, which lasts for 11 minutes, followed by a 12th minute of silence, hence, no image occupies the final position. Each photograph follows the same composition, with the sky and sea occupying equal halves of the frame.
With this work, I bring together my love of the sea, meditation and photography through a personal ritual. Especially during Covid, meditating daily by the sea helped me maintain inner balance, clarity and connection at a time of uncertainty and isolation. The sea became a place to pause, breathe and reconnect with myself and the world around me.
The series transforms this private practice into an invisible, behind-the-camera performance. The performance remains invisible to the viewer, with the camera acting as witness and technological mediator between myself and the sea.
Returning to the Brighton seafront where the photographs were created, I bring the work back to its original site, inviting viewers into a visual meditation on presence, change, time and spiritual connection between humans and nature.
