Being Connected: LIP London and Beyond

London and Beyond (London Independent Photography)

We are a collective of photographers based across the UK and internationally. We meet regularly as ‘LIP London and Beyond’, a satellite group of the wider community of ‘London Independent Photography’.

Working across a diverse range of photographic styles and practice – including film, digital, and experimental techniques – our collective provides a valuable creative sounding board for new ideas and work in progress.

In response to the exhibition theme ‘feedback loop’, we have curated a selection of work that arises from sharing and receiving ideas and feedback from the group. Some work responds directly to the theme; our show overall embodies the ethos of the ‘feedback loop’ as a constructive dynamic amongst a community of photographers.

Artists

Kathryn Alkins

I enjoy exploring the medium of photography, both in the capture and later editing. I would describe myself as being primarily interested in the aesthetic element but aiming to be Expressive in externalising my response and connection to a given landscape and experience.

Robin Maurice Barr

Robin Maurice Barr is a self taught photographer based in Cragg Vale, West Yorkshire. He has a passion for taking abstract photographs of people, architecture and aspects of the urban environment. He has exhibited in
galleries and exhibitions in Hebden Bridge, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, London, Brighton, and elsewhere.

The photographs on show by Robin in this exhibition are all in-camera double exposure images.

Sue Czapska

For me photography is an art form. I like to move my camera, using it like a paintbrush, or change the image created in the camera to produce sculpture - like effects, or to combine images, to give greater artistic scope.

Other photographer's images allow me to see how they see the world, something not possible otherwise.
Photography is like a sixth sense, linking me to the world and other people

Will Dickson

My photography, created near my home in Surrey, reflects my fascination with terrain vague – the unnamed, overlooked, unproductive edgelands, non-places between the proper places of everyday life. This forms a common theme, that links a series of projects on various aspects of these spaces

Alan Larsen

Alan Larsen is a documentary photographer interested in the representation of place, and how the built environment embodies and reflects the human environment. In his practice, Alan explores the hidden landscapes that lie beneath the surface, revealing the relationship of place to time, memory, identity, and the histories carried within it.

Alan is a Londoner, living and working in southeast London.

Sue McGilveray

My photography is quite diverse and includes work based on the geographical and historical significance of landscape, more abstract work often using toy cameras, and conceptual pieces incorporating collage and the work ‘Cut Up’ included in this exhibition.

Jo Stapleton

Photographer and print maker, using film, found source materials and alternative processes and techniques to explore the natural world.
