Collectives Hub: Whence We Came, Another Time, Another Place

Another Time, Another Place, brings together the work of Masoud Teimory, Bill Brooks and Simon Roth, three photographers whose family members came to the UK from different countries as a result of political upheaval and conflict. Drawing on their individual experiences, the collective explores how inherited histories continue to shape identity, memory and belonging across generations.

The project combines family archive photographs with contemporary images created during the artists’ MA Photography studies at the University of Brighton. By placing historical and newly made photographs in dialogue, the work examines how personal and collective histories are remembered, reinterpreted and carried into the present. The archive becomes an active space where family stories intersect with new narratives of place and time.

Responding to the theme Future Histories, the collective considers how the past informs the present while recognising that the stories we preserve and the images that we create today will shape future understandings of history. Together, their work invites audiences to consider the relationship between personal experience and the broader historical narratives that connect us all.

Whence We Came comprises three photographers, Masoud Teimory, Bill Brooks and Simon Roth, each of whose parents were born outside the UK. Masoud, Simon and Bill met in 2025, having completed master’s degrees in photography at the University of Brighton as mature students.

These shared experiences form the basis of their submission, Another Time, Another Place, for the 2026 Photo Fringe Collectives’ Hub .

Masoud and Simon are new to Photo Fringe but Bill has exhibited at previous Fringe exhibitions in 2020, 2022 and 2024 as part of the IrisCollective, and also in 2022 and 2024 as an individual exhibitor.

All three members of the collective exhibited at the inaugural POST Creatives exhibition in Hove, as part of the Open Houses programme at Brighton Festival earlier this year.
