Newhaven Open: Daisy Wingate-Saul

Following the Ouse: Newhaven

Following the Ouse: Part One is a new body of photographic work made in response to the idea of a Feedback Loop. It marks the beginning of a longer-term project to map the River Ouse as it wends its way through Sussex.

The work has evolved through repeat walks, sunrise pauses and chance encounters along the river between Southease Bridge and its mouth at Newhaven. Each meeting leads to another: a person suggests a place, a greeting prompts a photo, each image opening up possibilities for the next.

Encounters sit alongside observations of the river itself – tidal motion, morning mists, birds in flight, and shifting silt. Alongside the natural world are the traces of human presence; floating homes, heavy industry and iron crossings.

Together, the images form a portrait of life unfolding along the river.

With thanks to devoted Ouse swimmer Jack, river caretaker Gaz, The Lewes Pilot Gig club, Ouse Valley Morris, Paul from Fort Road Café and everyone I’ve met along this waterway so far.

Daisy's ongoing project Following the Ouse: Newhaven grew from this process. Beginning with walks along the River Ouse, Daisy uses photography to build a familiarity with Newhaven through encounters with its people, landscapes and everyday environments. Combining portraits, landscapes and quiet observations, the project considers the relationship between people, industry and nature, allowing each walk and encounter to shape what comes next.
