Newhaven Open: Ancient//Flippant Collective

Widdershins: Counter to the Direction of the Sun

Widdershins: Counter to the Direction of the Sun is a project created by Ancient//Flippant Collective, in which six artists have undertaken a counter-clockwise creative excavation of the Marine Workshops and immediate area surrounding the building- including the river, industrial areas of Newhaven, the old seaplane landing strip and the ferry to Dieppe.

Exploring a playful and collaborative method of art-making, each artist has made a ‘call’ in response to a visually, historically and/or personally significant site in the area. Each member of the collective has in-turn responded with an image, object or drawing to the original works. Put simply, six artworks respond to six sites in the local area, with each artwork prompting five more visual responses, gestures or ripples. Through multiple perspectives, a creative ‘archaeology’ or translation of these sites is taking place. The artists ask - what happens to understanding of place as its representation is passed down through multiple and varying creative interpretations?

Emma Lindsay

2.30pm

Emma Lindsay utilises a multimedia practice in an ongoing investigation into how writing, photography and socially engaged sound/movement practices can reinvigorate our perceptual experience and understanding of the changing ecologies and shifting political spheres we exist amongst.

Tallin Aylward

H

Tallin River Aylward’s work explores the boundaries of our landscape through story, folklore and history. Through his prints, drawings and book art, the countryside emerges as a divided space—a subconscious response to the reality of a fenced and quartered land. Tallin is a printmaker and artist based in Sussex, where he runs the printmaking workshop Little River Press.

Catherine Greenwood

Circle Widdershins

Catherine Greenwood is a contemporary visual artist and printmaker based in Sussex, England, working across etching, monotype and photogravure. Her practice explores the relationship between landscape, ecology and place, drawing inspiration from wetlands, local folklore and rewilded habitats.

Tilliana Greenwood

Keep Left

Tilliana Greenwood is a dance artist based in Sussex, England, working across live performance, film, and installation. Their practice explores body-land politics through an intersectional feminist lens, drawing on the concept of cueropo-territorio (body-land-terriotry). Improvisation is central to her creative process, using movement drawn from everyday life and transforming it to reveal the absurdities of neoliberal, late-capitalist landscapes. Poetry and text are woven through their work through song, spoken words and print.

Tom McNally

School Holidays in Dieppe

Tom McNally is an artist and writer from Brighton & Hove. He is the organiser of Poets Corner Arts Lab, a grassroots arts community and host of 100 Words of Astounding Beauty, a creative writing podcast.

Charlotte CHW

Insides Outside

Charlotte CHW is an interdisciplinary artist currently working primarily with the natural world and biodiversity as a metaphor for lived experience, especially infertility and grief. She is also exploring the way psychology influences our perspectives on encounters with the natural world. She works frequently with performance photography as a medium to combine her work as a Theatre Maker with her training as a photographer but is also interested in the potential for the natural world as a performer in and of itself.
