If Men Had the Menopause It’d Be ‘Cured’ By Now
Stephen Rendall & Amy Tointon
If Men Had the Menopause, It’d Be Cured by Now: Portraits of Perimenopause is an intimate, co-authored photographic collaboration exploring the physical and emotional shifts of midlife transition.
Moving away from clinical distance and outdated conventions, the work creates an honest space of shared authorship, challenging a culture that too often meets women’s bodily change with silence or discomfort.
The series documents the lived realities of perimenopause. It traces the cognitive friction of HAZE, the quiet vulnerability of This Is Me, and the direct, confronting gaze in Do You See Me Now. Rather than hiding the strain, the work meets the viewer eye to eye. By handwriting directly onto the border of the prints (as seen in I am...) Amy reclaims her own voice, layering the photographs with an intimate, protective mantle of words that declare who she is on her own terms.
Equally central to the work is the rediscovery of laughter and play. In works like Joy, bright colour and uninhibited laughter break through the quiet tension, showing that humour and levity are vital survival tools. Rather than framing bodily change as loss or decline, the exhibition celebrates resilience, self-possession, and the radical freedom of being fully seen.

His practice moves across digital capture, large-format camera systems, and alternative photographic processes, exploring collaborative storytelling, tactile mark-making, and the social politics of the body.
