Newhaven Open: Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck is a French painter, transdisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner based in rural Oxfordshire. Her practice spans painting, drawing, photography, film, installation, sculpture, writing and publishing, often exploring relationships between people, nature and everyday life through gentle, poetic forms. Ecological ideas, care and attention to the living world are central to her work, alongside an interest in collaboration and community.

Hoffbeck has maintained a daily 35mm film photography practice since 2010, using photography to observe moments of beauty, intimacy and connection within her surroundings. Her photographic work frequently engages with gardens, plants, food, family and rural life, drawing on her upbringing in Alsace and her ongoing relationship with horticulture. Her work has been exhibited internationally and published in numerous books and magazines.

She is the founder of Poetic Pastel and The Gardening Drawing Club, and co-founder of Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture. Through her artistic and community-based projects, she explores how creative practice can nurture relationships with ourselves, others and the environments we inhabit
