Newhaven Open: Clare Patrick, Of distant and near shores
Of Distant and Near Shores is a group exhibition curated by Clare Patrick, bringing together the practices of Emmanuelle Catherine, Cynthia Fan, Gwen Sion, Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin and Isadora Soares Belletti. Working across photography, film, sound, installation, sculpture, plants and moving image, the artists explore relationships between place, environment, memory, migration and belonging.
The exhibition brings together practices shaped by movement between places and disciplines. From familial and rural histories to plant science, diasporic memory, ecological research and coastal environments, the artists consider how landscapes are experienced, remembered, mapped and transformed. Their approaches range from intimate photographic and filmic narratives to experimental sound, site-responsive installation and research-led practices that bring human and more-than-human relationships into focus.
Curated by Clare Patrick, a curator, writer and educator based between France and the UK, the exhibition creates a space for dialogue between artists working across different geographical and cultural contexts. Together, their practices consider how environments hold memory and knowledge, while asking how we might understand, inhabit and reimagine places shaped by movement, histories and changing ecologies.
