Newhaven Open: Ancient//Flippant Collective, Widdershins: Counter to the Direction of the Sun

Widdershins: Counter to the Direction of the Sun is a collaborative lens-based project by Ancient//Flippant Collective, bringing five artists together to explore Marine Studios and the surrounding river, industrial areas and landscape of Newhaven. Responding to the Feedback Loop theme, the project uses a playful, counter-clockwise process of visual exchange: each artist creates a ‘call’ in response to a significant local site, which is then reinterpreted by the other four artists without them having visited the original location. These successive responses create a chain of perspectives, gestures and visual ripples, forming a collective creative archaeology of place. The resulting multimedia exhibition will bring together photography, film, installation, photographic etching and screen-print, reflecting the ways individual experiences and interpretations can continually feed into one another to create new understandings of Newhaven.

Ancient//Flippant is a shifting collective of Sussex-based artists who share a common interest in landscape, folklore, conservation and archaeology.
