RED FLAGS

Olivia Baumanis

RED FLAGS is a body of work that photographically endeavours to externalise Baumanis' personal anxiety around her father’s ongoing household and garden DIY projects and his obliviousness towards the chaos that ensues around the family home as a result. Candid, staged, snapshot images, and formal portraits create an extensive project that relates to themes of domestic life, familial relationships, personal angst, and financial concerns. Family discussions and images taken by both Baumanis and her parents developed into what she describes, as a cathartic collaboration. Baumanis’ intention is to understand the lack of disposable funds that her parents have endured and acknowledge that her father has found himself on an exhausting DIY hamster wheel.

RED FLAGS includes steel photo frames made by Baumanis' father specific to this project. Whilst there is an intention to portray chaos within the family environment, it is important to note many beautiful, well crafted bodies of work have arisen from Baumanis' fathers hard labour and skill.
