Socially Engaged Photography – talk and Q&A by Dr Gil Mualem-Doron & Photo Fringe producer Ricardo Reverón Blanco
Artist Talk: Socially Engaged Photography
In this artist talk, Dr Gil Mualem-Doron reflects on a decade of socially engaged photography through his mini-retrospective at The Vault Gallery, Brighton. Bringing together projects developed in the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Israel-Palestine, the exhibition explores migration, queer identities, displacement, belonging, environmental justice and contested histories. Mualem-Doron will discuss how collaboration, participation and what he calls the 'feedback loop' shape his approach to portraiture, challenging conventional relationships between photographer and subject. He will also consider photography as a space for encounter, dialogue and collective storytelling. The talk will be followed by a Q&A led by curator Ricardo Reverón Blanco.
